Tuesday 5th March
Today we followed the 48 km Great Forest Trees Drive in Shannon National Park and, as yesterday, much of it was on gravel roads.

We saw lots of colourful birds, many of which were too quick to be photographed.

We noticed a few trees like the one below, marked with reference points. The trees were marked and then mapped on a grid so that the foresters knew where they were.

There were several bright red splashes of colour where Banksia were still blooming.

There were large patches of nerines on the site of the logging village which was removed when the mill closed in 1968.

At one of the stops on the route this Australian robin hopped around in front of us but wouldn't stay still enough for us to get a close up.

Later on in the day we drove to Warren National Park and followed another track round the Karri Forest. Our first stop here was the Bicentennial Tree which has a fire lookout at the top and is over 60 metres tall.

The public can climb up it but this is as high as we went, as the steps are simply metal rods hammered into holes drilled into the trunk.

We found a quiet place by the side of the Warren River which was calm and peaceful.

A few kilometres further on we were able to see the same river from a higher viewpoint.

We saw several kangaroos today including this one with the farms and forests behind it.
