Just a short distance away from Leonora is Gwalia ‘living ghost town’. We were able to wander around the houses which stand virtually just as they were left when the township was abandoned. Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the USA, was the manager of this mine and had a house built here which is part of the Museum.
We took our lunch break at Leinster which is a mining town
that was built in 1976. Just across the road this goanna was very active.
On our way out of the town we stopped to view this unusual
rock formation.
This is a typical roadside view in this area. We crossed two
Royal Flying Doctor Emergency Landing Strips on the road.
We are staying in Sandstone tonight and took the local
heritage trail which led us to ‘London Bridge’, a well-known local sandstone
formation.
On the sandstone outcrop we saw quite a few of these parrots
that appeared to be pecking at the rock.
We are staying in Outback Accommodation which has Donga
style rooms mainly for the mine workers. The owners take in stray kangaroos
that have been orphaned or hurt in road accidents. They are nursed here and
eventually released back into the wild.
