Today we set off back along the Nullarbor Plain to return to Norseman. There are roadhouses about every 100 miles along the way and they provide very basic rooms and food. We stayed in two of them on our journey.
Every so often we would see one of these stations just off the highway. Each one was solar powered and we believe that they are relay stations for satellite phones (Telstra).
For all of the 650 miles we travelled along this road we looked out for wildlife but this is the nearest we came to seeing one of the estimated 400,000 camels on the plain.
After checking in at the hotel in Norseman, we did some sightseeing and on our way up to the lookout point, we passed this huge spoil heap created by the gold mining operation in the town.
At the lookout we strolled round the nature trail which also gave great views.
We then drove to the other side of town along a gravel road to see Lake Cowan which was partially dried up.
On our way back we parked at an elevated viewing point. We were the only ones there and were stunned by the scenery.
To one side we could see the winding gravel road by which we would return.
