Sunday 9th September
Our route today took us through the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument which covers 14,000 acres.
Our first stop was at the Painted Hills which were an amazing sight.
We hiked up the Carroll Rim Trail which overlooks the entire region with a bird's eye view of the Painted Hills from the summit.
The road we were following cut through some magnificient scenery. This is Castle Rock which is formed by basalt columns.
Here is Sheep Rock seen from the John Day River Trail. This river provides the irrigation for surprisingly green areas in this arid region.
