Tuesday 11th September
We woke up to ice on the roof of the car at 6am this morning. The sky was blue as we set off past Wallowa Lake to the tramway there.
Following a fifteen minute ride up to the summit of Mount Howard at 8,200 ft we walked some of the trails to view the breathtaking scenery around us.
After descending we drove through the deep gorge of the Imnaha River.
We then followed a fairly narrow gravel road to reach this view of Hells Canyon. It is the biggest canyon in the USA and 2,000 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon but less accessible. It is so deep that the Snake River, which flows through it, is not visible at this point.
We returned through the nearby town of Joseph which is well known for its many bronze sculptures that are displayed along the main street.
