Tuesday 18th September
Today we visited Lake Quinault and the Quinault temperate rainforest on the southern tip of Olympic National Park.
Once we entered the park the trees were suddenly huge. We followed a loop trail that took us through a corner of the ancient forest.
About 150 years ago settlers cleared parts of the forest and one of the original cabins still exists and is presently being renovated.
It has been noticeable that the trees are taking on autumnal hues around this area.
We stopped at a picnic area and walked to the edge of the lake which has lots of large, dead tree trunks floating around the sides.
Further on we climbed half a mile through the forest to view the Quinault big cedar tree, the largest in the world. It was massive, impossible to show in one photograph but you could easily walk around the space inside its trunk.
