The Lonely Planet guide recommends visiting the High Desert Museum just outside Bend and we were not disappointed.
We walked on the loop trail through the grounds before it got too hot and spent some time at the wildlife observation area.
Living hstory interpreters were first rate and we enjoyed a look round the 1904 sawmill, cabin and barn.
The indoor rooms feature the whole history of this region. At the end of the 19th century people from the UK were offered 160 acres of land for free if they lived on it for 5 years.
Just down the road we drove up Lava Butte, a cinder cone with great views from the top.
25 miles further on we followed the interpretive trail through Big Obsidian Flow which is Oregon's youngest lava flow (1300 years old).

ooooo - what's an interpretive trail? Sounds like a contemporary dance?!
