Wednesday 18th March
Whangarei to Paihia
This morning we visited Claphams Clocks, the clock collection started by Archibald Clapham who was born in Yarm, North Yorkshire. We were shown round by a member of the staff who was able to demonstrate many of the more unusual movements.

Just outside the town we visited the Whangarei Falls, supposedly the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand.
As we travelled up to the Bay of Islands we took a side road to the coast and enjoyed twenty miles of beautiful coastal scenery.

We spent most of the afternoon on a virtually deserted beach soaking up the sunshine just along the coast from Tutukaka.

Just a little further along the coast we stopped again at Matapouri where we watched a group of skilful surfers riding the big waves.

Back on the main road at Kawakawa we made a stop to see the very unusual Hundertwasser Toilets which were designer by the Austrian artist/sculptor Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This is one of the 101 "Must-Do's for Kiwis".
