Sunday 1st March
Franz Josef to Greymouth
After a night of pouring rain we continued north and as the sky began to clear the clouds hung over the mountains as if steam was rising from the trees.

Further on at Pukekura we realised why our sandfly bites were so big!

We took a break at Hokitika, where there are lots of expensive gold, jade and gem shops. Then we relaxed by the beach and found this unusual memorial sculpture to a couple who had lived there.

We crossed the Taramakau River on this unique bridge which is shared with the railway. You have to give way to trains - we checked very carefully before crossing.

After arriving at our destination of Greymouth, we went gemstone hunting on the beach and found pretty pebbles but no gems.

From there we went dolphin spotting at the breakwater and saw large rolling waves but no dolphins.
