Sunday 8th March
Waikanae to Napier
Today we spent several hours travellling on mainly small roads and passed through what we now know is typical North Island countryside. We saw lots of different farms, including one wind farm on one of the higher hillsides. Everything looked extremely green and we passed many fruit farms and vineyards.

About half way through our journey we passed through the dramatic Manawapu Gorge. The train track is perched on one side and the road on the other. We saw a 2005 plaque that was installed in appreciation of the engineers and surveyors that created these road and rail links.

On the outskirts of Napier we saw several sculptures that had been chainsawed out of huge tree stumps.

In Napier we parked up near this building and walked along a path by the seashore. In 1931 this city was nearly destroyed by an earthquake and was almost totally rebuilt in the Art Deco style. We hope to explore more tomorrow.
