Thursday 12th March

Taupo to Rotorua

Just out of Taupo we passed this geo-thermal power plant which was the second to be built in the world. The pipes stretched for a long way and gurgled and hissed with steam escaping from the ground and from the pipes.

We then drove on and took a detour to Orakei Korako, The Hidden Vallley, cave and thermal park. This is the best thermal area in New Zealand according to the Lonely Planet, which we tend to agree with.

A ferry carries visitors from the entrance to the park and back.

Just outside Rotorua we passed Rainbow Mountain which has rock faces with multicoloured surfaces and layers.
