Thursday 15th March
The squawks of four sulphur crested cockatoos greeted us this morning.

The unusual recent rainfall in the area we drove through meant that the scenery was green and lush.

We stopped at Tilba, a town preserved by the National Trust as an early Australian settlement.

Further on our journey we passed through mile upon mile of wooded hills. We had no idea that Australia contains such huge areas of forest.

Later we saw many large lakes, again filled by the recent heavy rain.

When we arrived in Canberra we drove to the top of Mount Ainslie to view the capital city from this well known high point.

We climbed to a higher point to get this view.

We drove across the city in rush hour, not to be recommended, to get to an even higher point up Black Mountain Tower at 870 metres above sea level.

We are very impressed with the city in its wooded setting around Lake Burley Griffin and the surrounding hills.
