Sunday 4th March
On the way to the rock this morning our driver spotted this thorny devil lizard sunning itself on the road.
When we arrived we set off to the rock to walk around part of the base, the Mala Walk. The greenery in front is very unusual but there has been more rain than normal recently.
As we were setting off around the base these two were setting off to climb to the top, an angle of 47 degrees in places. They returned at the same time as we did, three hours later.
When you get close to the rock there are great holes and caves in it.
This is the view from the inside of one of the bigger caves which shows a small area of the real grey colour of the stone. The red colour is caused by a thin crust of iron oxide.
In a few of the caves some paintings are still visible.
We followed a good path for about two kilometres and most of the time we were on our own.
At the end of the walk is Kuntja Gorge, at the bottom of which is this water hole and we were able to enjoy its cool atmosphere and listen to the birds and insects for about a quarter of an hour by ourselves.
