Wednesday 11th February
We headed straight off South down the coast road from Kaikoura as it was too wet and cloudy to be worth doing the peninsula walk. We were glad that we had driven around to the headland last night and had seen three seals only a few yards away from us on the rocks and the birds feeding at the edge of the beach.
The road we took turns inland and follows the river which, due to severe drought in the area, was virtually dry.

We were heading for the Alpine region and this was the view as we turned into the road to Hanmer Springs.

The main attraction here is the spa at the geothermal springs. We had to sample these and so spent the afternoon in the eight different spa pools ranging from warm to very hot sulphur springs.

The drought is so bad here that the fire hazard is extreme and all the forest trails that we had hoped to take have been closed.
