Wednesday 12th March
We walked up Queen Street to visit the New Gallery which is part of Auckland Art Gallery and which concentrates on contemporary art. On the sculpture deck we found this intriguing seat sculpture on which visitors are invited to sit. It looks over Albert Park and we enjoyed sitting here and watching someone learn to use a tightrope which was strung between trees just below us.

This was the piece of work that we liked the best by a local Maori artist.

We commented on what a lovely building it was and then discovered that it had won World Building of the Year 2013.

We were told that many of the older buildings were flattened in the 80's but some still remain such as St. Matthew's Church.

We explored the quayside looking at the many huge yachts that are moored here. The tower in the background is called Sky Tower which is 328 metres tall and is the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere.

In the Viaduct area this bridge links the wharves with the fish market area and lifts when boats need to enter or leave the harbour.

The sky has been very clear this afternoon and we enjoyed the sight of  beautiful sunset from our balcony.
