We began the day by driving to the AH Reed Kauri Park to see a remnant of original Kauri forest. We very quickly found ourselves on a Canopy Walkway high above the forest floor and near huge 500 year old Kauri trees.
We really felt as if we were in the middle of an old forest as there were few others around and the paths were cleverly laid out.
At the far end was a steep ascent over rocks to this view of a waterfall.
We scrambled down to the stream at the bottom for a different view.
Our next stop was at Mount Parihaka Lookout which gave stunning views over Whangerai and its surroundings.
At the other side of the valley we visited Whangerai Quarry Gardens. The gardens have been developed in an old quarry by community volunteers and are extensive and very picturesque.
As we were leaving we saw this beautiful Monarch butterfly and a group of Californian quails.
We only travelled an hour further north today to Paihia and had plenty of time to enjoy watching the boats and strolling along the front.
This mynah bird appeared in the tree just next to our balcony and seemed to object very loudly to us being here.
