We drove up the mountain road from Ohakune and when we reached the parking at 10.30 the temperature had only reached 7 degrees. We set off to follow a trail which led us through lovely forest.
This was our destination, Waitonga Falls, the highest falls on Mount Ruapehu.
As we returned the peak of Mount Ruapehu was completely clear of cloud and reflected well in the pools in the swamp.
We travelled north up the Desert Road on the eastern side of Mount Ngauruhoe, called Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films.
On a hillside further on we noticed steam escaping from vents among the trees.
We followed the road through a thermal area with Lake Taupo visible in places.
This was the view from a platform at a turn off a few miles further on.
As we were nearing Taumarunui we saw some fields with deer grazing in them.
