We are now in Ventura, 50 miles further up the coast of California.

This morning we drove up Highway 1, through Malibu, and most of the time we were just next to the sea. It was a relaxing drive because the roads were fairly quiet.

On a detour inland around a Naval Base we saw lots of crops being grown, some under plastic: avocados, rice, strawberries, grapefruit, oranges, flowers and this amazingly colourful field of harvested pumpkins.

This is the view of Ventura Beach from our hotel balcony. The weather today has been cooler and cloudier with some rain. The locals are saying this is unseasonal but the forecast says back to hot and sunny tomorrow. We took a stroll along this promenade and saw surfers, sandpipers, gulls, pelicans and even a couple of seals.

We thought we had seen most vending machines but this one in the hotel sells not only snacks and drinks but digital cameras and mobile phones.

We haven't been out much today as the weather is more like that in England than California so we have used the time to plan ahead for the next few days.
