We are now in San Bernardino, California.

This giant parrot is the last exisiting sign of a chain of gas stations which no longer exist. Prices were low when they stopped selling - this shows about 8p a gallon.

Just past Helendale we came across "Bottle Tree Ranch", an artistic creation started in 2000 and still continuing today. The turning metal sails and the rattling bottles made a lovely sound in the wind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD-nVh49xnM

In Victorville we visited the California Route 66 Museum which included this original Model T Ford from the 1920's. We were encouraged to handle and try out everything on display.

This trailer / caravan is from the 50's and includes most everything you would need for a trip along Route 66 in that era.

The road and railway lines wound their way through the rugged mountains which are created by the infamous San Andreas Fault.

This afternoon we were going to visit some of the forests and lakes in the area but there are huge local forest fires and some of the roads are closed. We could see the smoke on our way down into San Bernardino. 18,000 square miles of fires were only about 20% under control at mid-day but they were hoping that the wind would soon die down.

Absolutely fascinating to be part of your journey! The heat in places must be really fierce. Don't suppose you'd like to fly back for a day's supply? Carry on enjoying what you have both richly earned.
