Tonight we are about 50 miles further up the coast at Lompoc.

As we were driving along first thing, we saw this pier connected to a small island and thought that it would be an interesting place to explore. When we got there we found that it was a private island with locked gates across the pier and lots of 'KEEP OFF' & 'PRIVATE' signs - so we left.

We found our way into Santa Barbara and parked downtown to walk the 'Red Tile Tour' around the old buildings in the centre. As it was Saturday it was very busy but there was still lots of charm and character.

On one corner we came across The Museum of Art and were impressed by the variety and quality of the exhibits for such a small place.

Down on the front, by the pier, was a large skateboard park with lots of boarders doing tricks; some more successfully than others.

Beside the car park by the sea there were hundreds of sea birds but no people. We were going to take a walk on the pier but it was very breezy so we decided to continue North.

Ten miles out of Santa Barbara we found Refugio State Beach and relaxed there for a couple of hours in the sunshine. Further out to sea there were several oil rigs.

Next to us was a group of divers, some snorkelling and some with Scuba Gear. As you can see the waves were rolling in steadily.

Just coming into Lompoc we passed these unusual hills, with trees on the top but no green vegetation on the bottom, just very dry tall grass.

The day started cloudy and gray, with some rain at breakfast time but it improved as it went on. Local farmers were hoping for more rain as it is particularily dry at the present time.
