As we left Holbrook we drove past the famous Wigwam Hotel where each teepee is made of concrete and is full of 50's furniture. Outside there are contemporary cars. We did not stay here as there is no air-conditioning, telephones nor Internet.

Just a little further on, in Joseph City, we visited the iconic Jackrabbit Trading Post. The thing to do here is to have your photograph taken on the giant model outside.

If you know your music from the 70's you will recognise the words of "Take It Easy" by The Eagles. Winslow is only famous for this one line in the second verse of the song:
"I was standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona,
Such a fine sight to see."
This statue was erected on the corner to mark that particular spot.

We took a detour off Route 66 to visit this large hole in the ground. It was caused by a meteor impact 50,000 years ago. We took a tour of the rim trail with the ranger who told us lots of interesting things. The temperature was 90 degrees plus so hats were a necessity.
We met two lovely ladies from Indiana there who we talked to as we walked the trail and over lunch.

The scenery changed quite dramatically a few miles further on when we entered the Coconino National Forest.

We left Route 66 at Flagstaff and travelled South towards Sedona, passing through the edge of Red Rock National Park. We do not like to use the word 'awesome' too often but feel that no other word adequately describes this scenery. As we drove the ten miles to the bottom of the valley the scenery just got better and better.

Today has been a very scenic day, with beautiful weather and high temperatures. We came to this area to have a rest and relax but did not realise how tired we may have looked. At the restaurant this evening we were offerred the "Seniors' Price", saving $4. We do have to point out that seniors in the USA are those aged 55 and over.
There is so much to do and see here that we have booked an extra night and will be here until Wednesday.
