Wednesday 3rd October
Today we crossed back over into California. We took a detour from Highway 101 through Prarie Creek Redwood State Park.

Even though we had seen them before, we were still amazed by the size of the trees.

We walked a few trails through the forest and enjoyed the silence and the smell which was a mixture of moss and peat.

Regularily these old trees fall and decay on the forest floor.

One giant tree particularily caught our attention because it had a hollow base. This is normal in the older trees.

Some great views can be had by simply standing at the base of a tree and looking upwards.

There were some huge standing trees today but there have been even bigger ones that have fallen.

We stopped at the Redwood Forest Ranger Station and just out at the back was a deserted beach where we spent half an hour watching the big waves roll in.

Further on there is a string of lagoons separated from the sea by sand dunes. We took a detour into the Humboldt State Park to have a closer look at them.
