Thursdayb 25th February

Some images from today's 2 game drives
Back to Nairobi tomorrow.

A baby hippo just visible by the bank

Wednesday 24th February
Mount Kenya looked stunning in the early morning light.

We found three rhino very near the road when we went on our early morning game drive.

The bustard was displaying and strutting around his patch.

Back at the camp Keith was able to get a close-up photo of a caribou stork.

The beautiful purple bourgainvilea shimmered because it was covered by these constantly moving butterflies.

A late morning fruit punch provided welcome refreshment.

The river was too deep for the hippo to be on the stretch of river that we were allowed to visit but these skulls show why they are so dangerous.

This elephant feeding by the side of the road was well camouflaged by the bushes.

The river eagle was magnificient. We saw one fly in and their wing span is enormous.

A silver backed jackal was our last sighting on the evening drive
This wood fired boiler provides us with plenty of hot water,

After dinner this evening, we saw zebra at the waterhole here in camp.
Tuesday 23rd February
Relaxing, looking out over the waterhole outside our tent at Sweetwaters after a 4 hour drive from Nairobi.

On our first afternoon drive we saw lots of Common Zebra.

We stopped at the chimp sanctuary where the work that Jane Goodall started to rescue orphaned chimps is being continued. This area is not their natural habitat.

The raised roof on the van afforded us a good view.

We saw several big groups of impala.

The baboons were making a lot of noise and playing on the tree trunks.

The reserve is full of open grassland areas and we rarely saw more than one other van.

In this wetter area the grass was lush and we could hear the elephants pull it out, roots and all.

We saw three lionesses and three cubs resting very close to the road

When the ranger invited us to touch the rhino Alan was quick to volunteer.
The giraffe were beautiful and moved in long, loping strides.

Monday 22nd February

We spent most of today relaxing around the hotel pool and grounds. It was very warm but overcast - pleasant to sit outside reading.

We took a walk around the grounds and found this old tree stump carved into otters.

At the other side of the garden there are several waterfalls. This is where we have seen some striking butterflies and a few lizards.

A new block of rooms is being constructed and we find the rough wooden scaffolding fascinating.

This lounge is the coolest place in the hotel as it is on the first floor with windows on three sides which catch the breeze.

On our final evening we shared some of the wedding cake with Keith and Ruth.

Sunday 21st February

We spent a relaxing morning by the hotel pool and then had a great time at the Giraffe Centre just south of the city. It is a reserve of about 150 acres that cares for the Rothschild giraffe, an endangered species. You can hand feed the animals with either grass or pellets.

SATURDAY 20th FEBRUARY - RUSSELL & CHRISTINE'S WEDDING DAY

We were both very excited as we prepared to leave from our hotel for the big wedding.

Glenys' brother Keith and his wife Ruth had travelled to Kenya to be there too.

While Glenys and Ruth went to collect the bride and her party, Keith and I went to be with Russell and his groomsmen.

The bridesmaids walked elegantly up the aisle to await Christine and her mother Eunice

The bride & groom begin their wedding vows with Pastor Tom officiating. Edrin, a good friend from university, was his best man and Elsie, a friend of Christine from her school days, was her chief bridesmaid.

Just after the ceremony, some photos were taken outside the Cathedral. This one is taken with all their friends who had travelled from the UK.

Just beside the Cathedral, we had a quiet moment with Rachael and Mike.

Russell and Christine are leaving for the reception at Karen Blixen Museum grounds.

The reception venue at Karen Blixen was in beautiful open-air tents and there were about 350 guests.

The wedding cake had an African theme and had it's own tent in the centre.

The wedding couple arrive at the head of a long line of female guests who all danced in to the reception and round twice more.

The best man Edrin and chief bridesmaid Elsie, with Russell and Christine at the head of the line.

The happy couple after they got chance to have a rest.

Part of the ceremony was when Glenys had to give Christine advice on cooking for Russell.

Christine's mother, Eunice, giving a wedding speech followed by the giving of a gift from her friends at the bank.

Russell and Christine cutting the cake - after this they both had to feed each other a mouthful.

Keith and Ruth giving best wishes.

Rachael, Russell and Christine.

We had a most marvellous day and wish our son and his new bride a happy future.
