Tuesday 1st January
Blue skies persuaded us to drive to Coldstones Cut just past Pately Bridge today.

As we drove there the splendid view over Darley Dale was slightly hazy along the horizon.
When climbing up to the Cut we could see that the grass was amazingly green. There were clear signs of smoke from moorland fires. Odd at this time of year.
The car park at the entrance was full. We have never found this place so busy before.
Our last visit was in the dark when the lights seen here illuminated the tops of the walls. The quarry is much deeper now but no wider. Someone mentioned problems with flooding. Perhaps it is nearing the end of its life as the site manager said their time here was quite limited a few years ago.
Looking towards Nairobi over 7,000 km away. London is about 350km. The compass information and distances to places both local and far flung is fascinating.
Pately Bridge can be seen towards the right in the distance.
Looking from the top across the quarry viewing area towards one of the moorland fires.
The entrance walls enclose and shelter you as you enter the sculpture. The huge construction can't be seen until you are almost there.
