On our travels we had seen this building on top of a hill. We discovered it is called Selmun Palace. The original palace used to be rented out to the Knights of St. John as a place to relax. The current building was constructed in the 18th century and is now part of a hotel.
We drove towards the end of the peninsula to Fort Campbell. It was built by the British in 1938 as the last fortification to be built on Malta. It protected the approach to both Mellieha and St. Paul's Bay.
It has fallen into a state of disrepair and nature is now reclaiming the area.
Below the fort is St. Paul's Bay, the next bay along the coast from where we are staying.
There are carefully constructed terraces inland of the fort just as there are all over the island.
These stone walls can be seen in many places and are the equivalent of the dry stone walls in the North of England.
This village was constructed for the 1980 film Popeye starring Robin Williams. It took seven months to build and is still a popular attraction in Anchor Bay. The tree trunks came from Holland and the roof shingles from Canada.
Anchor Bay was named because of the many Roman anchors that were found on the seabed here.
