Saturday 9th May

We spent the afternoon at Burnby Hall near Pocklington. It was the last day of the tulip festival.

At the far end of the lake a new woodland garden is being created.

Friday 20th March

Low tide coincided with the eclipse in Whitby this morning.

The sky was blue again and the town still quiet just 10 minutes after the eclipse.

Thursday 19th March
At low tide the remains of the ramps where ships were once launched can be seen near our apartment.

At 10am the old part of town was still very quiet.

Low tide and low cloud at the mouth of the harbour.

The streets may be narrow but the bin lorry is still driven along here though it did look as if it was a narrower vehicle than the usual ones.

Outside the harbour wall the exposed sheets of rock and the pools made for interesting walking.

In the afternoon sun people were painting some of the larger boats and one is being hauled out of the water onto the trailer before joining the line up for maintenance work.

High tide found us back at the harbour mouth with just a distant haze limiting the blue sky.

Wednesday 18th March

As we ate breakfast we watched the gulls feeding at low tide.

The large boat that is being repaired masks the slipway that is used by the canoeists and the small cruisers.

Cloud shrouded the abbey for most of the day. The yard where the large boats are being repaired seems to be fairly busy.

A plaque over the main entrance identifies this interesting building as the 'Seamens Hospital', built in 1675.

The sun appeared just before sunset.

Tuesday 17th March
We are spending a couple of days in an apartment with a great view of Whitby and the River Esk.

On our way over the North York Moors this morning we followed the trailer towing these canoes. It was interested to see them being used by a group of children at the end of the afternoon.

Saturday 28th February
Snowdrops in the woods above Rievaulx Terrace where we could hear the hounds from the hunt that we came across on our journey here.

We were lucky enough to be there when the Temple at the end of the terrace was opened for half an hour. It was used as a summer lunch venue when it was completed. It took the Italian artist three years to paint the ceiling. Money was no object for the eighteenth banker who had it built.

There are many lovely views across the valley and Rievaulx Abbey.

Saturday 3rd January
The big Xmas 1500 piece jigsaw puzzle finally completed along with a second Christmas when all of us got together.

The big hit of the day was a tiny remote control helicopter.
