Friday 31st October
This evening we visited "Illuminating York" when parts of the city are lit up, with sound and special effects to add to the atmosphere.

At the National Railway Museum the locomotives were shown in dramatic colours with steam and smells to create a stunning display.

Thursday 30th October

We drove over the North Yorkshire Moors through thick fog but when we arrived in Whitby it cleared. We parked for the day up by the abbey.

We walked down the 199 steps with panoramic views of the harbour ahead of us.

The streets were very busy and crowded but when we stepped into this yard the noise and the bustle disappeared.

We crossed the swing bridge over the River Esk and stopped by the harbour.

In the evening we returned to the abbey to enjoy the sight of the ruins lit up by floodlights.

Sunday 19th October
It was windy but sunny and Roundhay Park was full of autumn leaves swirling around.

The lake was choppy as we walked round the path along the edge enjoying the October sunshine.

Saturday 18th October
After taking Rachael to her friend's house in Sheffield, we continued on to Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. It was a perfect day for a visit with clear views of the hall and gardens. It matches the description "More glass than wall".

The walls of every room are lined with tapestries filled with detailed scenes.

Later in the afternoon we explored the surrounding parkland where the autumn colours were at their best.
